Going To The Rose Guide for Charlotte's Web

WELCOME TO THE ROSE!

It’s almost time for our next production, Charlotte’s Web!

The Rose has put together some special information to help you and your family to get ready for the upcoming performance. Before you go to the show, you might want to take a few moments to review this “Know Before You Go” Guide so everyone will know what to expect from the performance!

The Story You Will See

Adapted from the book by E.B. White
By Joseph Robinette

PRODUCED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT WITH DRAMATIC PUBLISHING, WOODSTOCK, ILLINOIS

Wilbur the pig doesn’t appear to have a very bright future when Fern saves him. Surrounded by supportive barnyard friends on Zuckerman’s Farm — and befriended by a very gifted spider — Wilbur becomes Some Terrific, Radiant Pig! Revisit the timeless magic of a story that’s touched the hearts of generations of families with its universal themes of friendship and selflessness.

Sponsored by:
APR 19 – MAY 5, 2024 | 70 minutes

Know Before You Go
Here are some things your family might like to “Know Before You Go”:
  • Inspired by the characters in the show, the lobby will be decorated with fake spider webs and spiders. You will also be offered a plastic spider ring so you can participate in the show as Charlotte’s Baby Spiders! If your child has an aversion to spiders, you may want to address their presence before coming to the show. And as always, they are welcome to decline the ring as they enter the theater.
  • This production takes place on a farm where the characters will address the killing of animals for food. You may want to discuss with your child the connection between the animals you see on a farm and the food that reaches your plate.

  • During the show, there are many discussions of death and grieving. A main character will also die peacefully of old age near the end of the play. Wilbur especially learns that a life well lived is more important than a long life! You may
want to address life changes and the process of grieving with your child.
  • In this production, some actors will be playing multiple characters on stage. See if you can spot all the characters one actor is playing!

The Characters You Will Meet

Some characters you will meet in Charlotte’s Web:

  • Wilbur – A pig that was the runt of the spring litter. He is sold to the Zuckermans after Fern saves him and raises him like a baby. Wilbur idolizes Charlotte and tries to live up to her positive view of him.
  • Fern – An eight-year-old girl who saves Wilbur from being killed as a piglet. She is compassionate and kind and quickly bonds with Wilbur as she cares for him.
  • Charlotte – A spider that lives in the barn at Zuckerman’s farm. Charlotte is kind, knowledgeable, and wise. She befriends Wilbur and comes
up with an idea to save Wilbur’s life.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Arable – Fern and Avery’s parents.
  • Avery – Fern’s trouble-making sister.
  • Templeton – A rat that lives in the Zuckerman barn.
  • Homer, Edith, and Lurvy – Residents of the Zuckerman farm.
  • Goose, Gander, Sheep and Lamb – Other animals that live on the Zuckerman farm.

From Story to Stage

  • Charlotte’s Web was originally a children’s book written in 1952 by author E. B. White.

  • Charlotte’s Web was made into a cartoon movie in 1973. If you’ve ever seen a movie of Charlotte’s Web, it was probably this one! (There is also a live action movie of the book made in 2006.)

  • Charlotte’s Web was first produced onstage as a musical in 1989.

  • Playwright Joseph Robinette has also adapted lots of famous children’s stories for the stage like: Anne of Green Gables, The Jungle Book, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and more!

  • Joseph Robinette also wrote the book for A Christmas Story: The Musical which will be at the Rose next December!
