Know Before You Go
Here are some things your family might like to “Know Before You Go”:
  • This show features characters from the popular animated show, Arthur & Friends. Several actors will portray multiple characters throughout the production.
  • As the show delves into the characters’ imaginations, this show will utilize a variety of fun and exciting theatrical techniques, including haze and moments of flashing lights to simulate camera flashes.
  • Actors in this show will enter the auditorium near the audience, particularly near the front row of seats.
  • During one imaginative scene, there will be an onstage depiction of extraterrestrial aliens that might be mildly frightening for younger audience members. You may want to remind those with you that the action on stage is pretend.
  • As Arthur works through
his challenges with stage fright, this show will depict some examples of anxiety about public speaking. You may want to have a conversation with your young people about personal fears, how to support those with anxiety and how to use coping mechanisms when facing difficult circumstances.
  • This show includes examples of mild teasing. It may be helpful to talk with the young people you bring about treating people with kindness.

The Characters You Will Meet

A few of the characters you will meet during this production:

  • Arthur – An eight-year-old aardvark who is generally unsure of himself. He is trying to find his way and his voice.
  • DW – Arthur’s little sister who is pretty sure the whole show is about her.
  • Buster – Arthur’s best friend. He is a white rabbit who loves to eat, is obsessed with aliens, loves telling jokes, and is an amateur detective. He is a good friend and a big dreamer.
  • The Brain – A highly academic bear who is well-educated in many subjects, especially science and math. He is a reassuring presence.
  • Muffy – A true fashionista and a calm guide.
  • Francine – a world changer and disrupter, Francine enjoys playing sports, horseback riding, playing the drums and singing.
  • Mr. Ratburn – Arthur’s third- and fourth-grade teacher, who they learn is a rockstar turned heartfelt teacher — and maybe not who he seems.

From Story to Stage

  • Arthur began as a series of children’s books by Marc Brown, who wrote the first Arthur story in 1976 — almost 50 years ago.
  • Arthur began as a TV series on PBS in 1996 and had 25 seasons! It was the longest-running animated show for young people ever!
  • Arthur and Friends Make a Musical was first developed and had its world premiere at First Stage in Milwaukee, WI in 2022.
  • Playwright John Maclay also wrote Goosebumps: The Phantom of the Auditorium, which was on The Rose Mainstage in 2018.
  • Composer and Lyricist Brett Ryback is a professor of Musical Theater at the University of Southern California, and also wrote the music for Nate the Great: The Musical.
